For example, at the level used in the formula, lactic acid primarily acts as a humectant, helping attract and retain moisture, while citric acid is used to help balance the formula's pH so it's closer to your skin's natural pH.

Which side should I use first?

That said, if you feel like you need more glide, you can start with the smooth side first to get more of the formula onto your skin, then follow with the textured side.
